Richard Taki The theme for the 2014 Auckland Pride Parade will be “Time”, with its Director calling on participants to make it a representation of our past, present and future. The second annual parade will hit Ponsonby Rd in 22 February, running from Western Park to Three Lamps at the later time of 7PM, thanks to some concerted wrangling by organisers. Pride Parade Director Richard Taki is urging people planning floats to think about when their rainbow history began. “What did your group or organisation look like back then? What does it look like now – and what will it look like in the future?” he asks. “I want us to think about our past, present and especially our future – and these are the dimensions I'd like to see in the Parade,” Taki says. “I also wish to showcase the Pacific Rim and make this our point of difference from other Pride Parades around the world.” He continues: “Our cultural memories are filled with first peoples, gods, canoes and ships, art, dance and music. History is colour and sound. We’ve lived at the margins and we’ve come into the centre. We’ve had political struggles and legal victories. We mourn the people we have lost. We honour our forebears, but celebrate the living.”
