Labour may ensure gay/lesbian representation

Tue 29 Oct 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News View at NDHA

Two of Labour's rainbow MPs Maryan Street and Louisa Wall at the GABA Charitable Auction Labour is considering altering its constitution so gay and lesbian candidates are “fairly represented” on its list, along with other minorities. At present, the constitution says there shall be no barriers to nominees on the grounds of sexual orientation or marital status. A proposal will be considered at the party’s conference this weekend which would ensure the list represents sexual orientations fairly, along with doing the same for Maori, gender, ethnic groups, age, youth and people with disabilities. Labour currently has four openly-gay MPs; Grant Robertson, Maryan Street, Louisa Wall and new Ikaroa Rawhiti MP Meka Whaitiri.
