Adored dressmaker Sue King dies in Sydney

Tributes are pouring in for Sue King, a talented designer and identity on Auckland’s gay scene in the 70s and 80s, who has died peacefully in Sydney. King passed away in the early hours of Monday morning after being diagnosed with stomach and liver cancer earlier in the year. The talented designer and seamstress was known for whipping up incredible outfits without patterns, and was one of the mainstays of the performing scene in Auckland in the 70s and 80s. Former headlining showgirl Nicole Duval says she was one of the best dressmakers she has ever known. She was very talented. You could take a picture out of a magazine to her and say 'I'd like this' and she'd do it. She was very clever.” King is also believed to have been the first New Zealander to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday at 11AM at Manning Chapel, 87 Victoria Rd, in Rozelle. Friend Jamie Griffiths is urging those who can’t make it to Sydney for King’s funeral next Wednesday to have a drink and release some pink balloons for her.
