Daniel Zamudio Four men have been convicted of the horrific murder of a gay 24-year-old in Chile. In March last year, Daniel Zamudio was set upon in a Santiago park, where his attackers beat him with glass bottles, broke his right leg with a heavy stone, burned him with cigarettes and carved swastikas into his skin He was pronounced dead in hospital nearly a month later. Patricio Ahumada, Alejandro Angula, Raúl López and Fabián Mora, who were all between 19 and 25 at the time of the attack, have been convicted of his murder. Judge Juan Carlos Urrutia said Thursday they were guilty of a crime of "extreme cruelty'' and "total disrespect for human life.'' They will be sentenced later this month. The case led to the introduction of a hate crime law in Chile, known as ‘Zamudio’s law’ after massive public outcry. Thousands turned out for his funeral procession as it journeyed for three hours from his home town in San Bernardo to Santiago’s main cemetery.
