A P-Town gaycation

Fri 4 Oct 2013 In: Entertainment View at NDHA

At the very tip of Cape Cod, GayNZ.com’s Jacqui Stanford found a magical place: Provincetown. A beachside haven where straight couples are the minority, while gay people stroll hand in hand beneath fluttering rainbow flags. Known simply as “P-Town”, this friendly gaycation spot is somewhere you simply have to visit if you head to the East Coast of the US. My wife and I were treated to a few days in P-Town as part of our Northern Hemisphere honeymoon extravaganza, and we knew we had arrived somewhere special as we sped closer to the tip of the Cape. Well, we did stop along the way for lobster first: Wifey tucking into a lobster So after the pit stop, as you near the tip of Cape Cod, Rainbow flags begin appearing on the odd driveway or business as you near the place, gently increasing in frequency until you feel like you have fallen into some kind of fabulous parallel gay world. Commercial St, the main drag Couples, straight or gay, walk the main drag of Commercial St hand in hand, and nobody bats an eyelid. People stop and chat and coo over dogs (there are a LOT of dogs) and it’s hard to know who is happier in Provincetown, the gays, or the dogs of gays. This is a place where canines of all breeds preen and swagger on every corner, lapping up every second. There are speciality dog stores like nothing you have seen before. Want a rainbow dog treat? No problem. A rainbow collar? The wife snapped one up for our looming puppy. There are amazing things everywhere you look in P-Town, like this house with a sculpture garden In fact the shopping is super fun in Provincetown, from junk stores where you can find all kinds of fun things for friends back home, to clothes and jewellery for daytime wear and leather get ups for the wee hours. The stores are interspersed by cafes, bars, clubs and restaurants. The food is great and the choices wide-ranging. There are also plenty of shows on during summer, and as you walk down Commercial St at night you can hear pianos clunking to show tune sing-alongs, banging club bass and squeals from drag shows. And you don't even need to research if you are lazy, as people will be on the street in full get-up trying to get you to come along to their show. Commercial St at night And, for the next morning recovery, there are amazing beaches close at hand ... Race Point Beach is just a few minutes' drive Of course, like everything wonderful, this town can come with some pretty hefty price tags at peak season and you’d be best advised to scour the usual deal sites for an accommodation bargain. The beachfront cottages (and our lovely hosts) We were lucky enough to have friends who not only visit regularly, but actually married on the beach, so thanks to them we had an amazing secret cottage on the beach for a super cheap price. This allowed us to mix our eye-popping eager tourist trips into town with languorous sunny mornings on the porch. The view from our cottage If you don't want to drive on the right hand side of the road, never fear, you can get to P-Town by a ferry from Boston. And trust me, you want to see this place. It's like something from a picture book - well, a picture book written by someone ridiculously fabulous anyway.  Jacqui Stanford - 4th October 2013
