Rainbow soccer laces campaign draws criticism

Mon 23 Sep 2013 In: International News View at Wayback

A campaign to encourage support form programmes to stop abuse of glbti people may have backfired after boxes of sponsored rainbow laces were dropped off at UK soccer clubs. Soccer, especially in the UK and Europe, is increasingly seen as being riddled with racism and homophobia amongst its players and supporters. But the involvement of a bookmaker as sponsor has irritated some soccer clubs who say they will not be endorsing the laces campaign, though their players are free to use the laces if they wish. A number of players and people associated with the sport, including a BBC sports host, did wear the laces at the weekend. The Premier League has backed the laces campaign's pro-equality message, though it too questions the involvement the betting company which is renowned for its publicity stunts.
