Williams: Robertson's sexuality a problem

Sun 25 Aug 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News View at NDHA

Grant Robertson Grant Robertson's homosexuality could work against him in his bid to become the next leader of the Labour party, according to a past president of the party. Robertson, who was deputy leader under the now-resigned David Shearer,  is one of three serious contenders for the leadership, along with David Cunliff who was just beaten to the post by Shearer at the last change at the top. Mike Williams notes that Labour, while generally socially progressive, does have a significant conservative membership in areas such as South Auckland. “I think they would be unhappy with Grant Robertson,” says Williams. However, 3 News conducted a quick poll of Labour supporters in the safe Labour South Auckland seat of Manurewa, currently held by lesbian MP Louisa Wall. The poll indicates most of them wouldn't have an issue with a gay party leader.
