Weddings coverage "affirming" for glbti people

Tue 20 Aug 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The extensive and positive media coverage of yesterday's first legal same-sex weddings affirms that everybody has the right to choose the partner who is right for them, says national counseling and support organisation OutlineNZ. All major TV, radio, print and internet media yesterday and this morning have carried images and video of same-sex weddings with brides kissing brides, grooms embracing grooms, all surrounded by beaming families and well-wishers. "It shows that glbti relationships are the same as other relationships," says Outline manager Trevor Easton. "And I think it affirms for people struggling with their sexuality that they too can be good and accepted human beings." Trevor Easton Easton feels the media coverage was "a bit pumped up... but we must bear in mind that this was a highly significant change in our place in society... a vast and major change." "The whole New Zealand community is talking about it, and with a positive slant," he observes.
