Fri 16 Aug 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News

Mayoral Hopeful Jacquie Grant The West Coast's gay community icon Jacquie Grant has launched a campaign to become the Westland District's next mayor. Branding herself as a 'realist, pragmatist and a problem solver' on her mayoral election campaign website, Grant seeks to convince the voters by highlighting her extensive community involvement over 32 years. Grant has supported many foster children over the years. She was appointed as a member for the Human Rights Tribunal for nine years, and she is also a current community representative for the Benefit Review Panel for Work and Income. She has been involved in local body politic before, serving on the Moana ward of the Grey District. Grant was appointed as a Member of The New Zealand Order of Merit in 1997 for her community support. Grant's mayoral manifesto includes promoting economic development within the Westland area, transforming performance in the Planning and Regulatory Unit, implementing a rating review, making Councillors more accountable; and running Council business transparently. She has given herself a time frame of three years to achieve her objectives.
