Oz politician denigrates gay marriage

Wed 14 Aug 2013 In: International News

Australia's Opposition leader, Tony Abbott, has denigrated same-sex marriage as "the fashion of the moment." The gaff-prone Abbott was speaking on a radio show when he made the comment. Saying he personally opposes extending equal marriage rights to same-sex couples but that he also opposes discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender or sexuality he then described same-sex marriage as "the fashion of the moment." Labour government MPs have condemned the statement, with lesbian Finance Minister Penny Wong tweeting: "Note to Mr Abbott: Equality is not a fashion item."
