An exampled of the GENDERSMASH! concept All and sundry are being invited to take part in a public performance piece on Auckland's Karangahape Rd tomorrow. Creator Amelia Hitchcock says GENDERSMASH! will playfully challenge gender as 'natural', and emphasise that it's construction and our willingness to 'act' our gendered roles. The artist wants to disrupt the two gender model, celebrating the diversity of gender, sex, sexuality and personal expression and says all are welcome. Anyone who wishes to participate is asked to meet on K' Rd on Saturday afternoon at 1PM Outside Alleluya in St Kevins Arcade, for a brief meeting. Hitchcock asks everyone dress a manner which "expresses and emphasises the performance of gender" explaining "this could be dressing in drag, experimenting with androgyny, or pushing gender representation to the extreme". Black and white clothing is encouraged, with one other colour only, so the group is unified. The event will be filmed and photographed, and people who come along to watch are urged to catch the piece on their phones or cameras and share it far and wide.
