Rest home campaign focusing on GLB first

Sat 10 Aug 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News

File photo The creators of a new rest home campaign raising awareness about gay, lesbian and bisexual residents say elderly trans people have not been included yet because they decided to first concentrate on sexual minorities. The resource kit is designed to educate staff in aged care facilities about homophobia, so elderly people don’t have to go back into the closet. It includes a short video, workbooks for facilitators and participants, and guidelines on caring for LGB residents, and was created by the School of Nursing at The University of Auckland in collaboration with a working group drawn from the aged care sector and the Auckland LGB community. “The group discussed including trans people but for this initial phase we decided that we really wanted to focus introducing sexual minorities to staff in general,” says Dr Michal Boyd from Auckland University’s Department of Geriatric Medicine. “We focused the video on a gay male couple because in our research we found staff mentioned this as a particular challenge.” You can see the video and get the resource kit here
