A Big Bear Weekend event at The Honeypot Cafe One of Christchurch’s gay-favourite venues The Honeypot Café has closed. It’s gone into liquidation, two and a half years after the quake destroyed its Lichfield St home and its owner Rob Gould took a chance on moving to Colombo St in Sydenham. While it was initially packed off, numbers fell off as other cafes opened. Gould has thanked all his loyal customers. “No doubt the naysayers will say ‘I told you so’ and moan about the changes that we made, but hey, you can't say that we didn't try,” he says. “Post-earthquake Christchurch has been a lottery in many respects, and my number didn't come up, despite my best efforts.” The Honeypot hosted Christchurch’s GLBTI New Year’s Eve party and Bears Christchurch are regular patrons. The Bears have thanked Gould for making them feel so welcome and supported. “They offered us a safe space that was our own when our previous drinks space was getting too crowded for us to be able to function as a group. It’s been a great few years there and we appreciate it immensely,” a spokesman says. Bears Christchurch is moving the Thursday Night Bears Drinks to Club 604 at the Woolston Tavern on Ferry Rd. Meanwhile Gould is hopeful someone will buy the Honeypot and get it back up and running.
