MFAT issues travel warning for Russia

Tue 6 Aug 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News

A man protests the Russian anti-gay propaganda gag law New Zealanders are being warned about travelling to Russia, as a result of its anti-gay propaganda law. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s latest Safe Travel advice warns foreigners who promote anything GLBTI can be fined, jailed and deported. “Homosexuality is legal in Russia, and it is not yet known how this law will be applied,” MFAT says. “These laws may affect public expression and demonstrations on such issues, and we advise New Zealanders to avoid these situations.” The warning comes as New Zealand gay Olympian Blake Skjellerup is preparing for next year's Sochi Winter Games, where he is vowing to wear a pride pin. New Zealand is yet to formally condemn the homophobic Russian laws, however Green MP Jan Logie is seeking support for a motion in Parliament on the issue.
