Vodka maker backs protests at Russian laws

Mon 29 Jul 2013 In: International News

One of the companies which makes Stolichnaya-branded vodka has lent its support to the condemnation of Russia's recently intensified anti-gay laws. Following a small Chicago-based campaign against Russian products in light of increasing persecution of lgbti people in Russia Stolichnaya has posted a banner on its website stating: "Stolichnaya Premium Vodka stands strong and proud with the global LGBT community against the actions and beliefs of the Russian government." Stolichnaya was a Russian state-owned brand in Soviet times but is now produced by two different entities. SPI, a Luxembourg-based company, produces the drink, labeled "Premium Vodka," in Latvia for distribution around the world except Russia. Within Russia a nearly identical product, labeled "Russian Vodka," is made and distributed by state-owned and Moscow-based Soyuzplodimport.
