Mag cover designed to challenge perceptions

Tue 23 Jul 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

A student magazine has put its own spin on a famous John and Yoko front cover, replacing the iconic couple with two men. A sexuality issue of Critic reproduces the 1980 Rolling Stone cover, shot by Annie Leibovitz, with two men photographed by Dunedin photographer Alex Lovell-Smith. There is also an alternative cover featuring a man and a woman. Editor Sam McChesney has told the New Zealand Herald the covers were to illustrate Critic's "sex issue" and challenge perceptions about sexuality. "We went with the two guys as well as the guy and the girl to raise awareness of heteronormativity and try and challenge that perception a little bit.”
