Russia: Dutch film crew fined for propaganda

Tue 23 Jul 2013 In: International News View at Wayback

Four Dutch filmmakers have been fined after being questioned by authorities over ‘gay propaganda’. The group was making a film about gay rights during a forum in Murmansk, but were later detained by police on Sunday and questioned for several hours, BBC reports. They have been fined just 3,000 roubles each (NZ$116) for violating visa rules and appear to have escaped any further action. One of the filmmakers, also a councillor, Kris van der Veen, has tweeted, "after weird day, riding in car away from court. I believe indeed that there won't be a case." The Dutch foreign ministry has told AFP it was "concerned about the arrests" and is "doing everything possible to provide support to the group". UPDATE: The trio has since been banned from Russia for three years.
