A reported surge in the prevalence of HIV amongst young gay men in Bangkok is being fueled by the increasing numbers of casual sex websites and cheap bars facilitating sexual encounters, often through prostitution, according to HIV Foundation Thailand. The Thai government achieved some success in controlling the predominantly heterosexual epidemic in the 1990s, but figures highlighted by the country's Ministry of Health and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention indicate the prevalence of HIV infection amongst gays has increased 30% in the past decade. The latest available annual figures, for 2012, show that 41% of new infections are amongst gay and bi men. Young gay men aged between 15 and 21 years are particularly prevalent on the worrying figures. The Thai government has historically spent little on HIV prevention work amongst men who have sex with men or on their medical care. Most of the money spent comes from international agencies, channeled through non-governmental agencies.
