England and Wales have officially legalised same-sex marriage, with the Queen giving her royal stamp of approval. It has become enshrined in law thanks to the Queen’s approval, in a week when it was cleared in the House of Lords and Commons. The bill enables gay couples to get married in both civil and religious ceremonies in England and Wales. However, religious organisations will have to 'opt in' on performing gay marriages. It is expected to come into force next year.
