Russia bans gays from adopting children

Mon 15 Jul 2013 In: International News

Vladimir Putin Hot on the heels of banning ‘gay propaganda’, Russia has outlawed gay couples adopting. Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed the law, which aims to protect children from "dictated non-traditional sexual behaviour" and rid them of "distresses of soul and stresses, which according to psychologists' research, are often experienced by children raised by same-sex parents," according to a misinformation-filled 'fact sheet' on the Kremlin's website. The nation has also recently passed a law making it illegal to say gay relationships are equal to straight ones, and introducing fines for individuals and organisations who promote information ‘directed at forming non-traditional sexual setup’ in minors. Foreigners who fall foul of the law can not only be fined, but arrested for 15 days and deported.
