Naida Glavich The Maori party has chosen a woman with a history of promoting tikanga Maori over her rival for the party's presidency, a follower of Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki. Naida Glavish came into the public eye when, as a Telecom tolls operator in the 1980s, she was censured by the company for greeting callers with "kia ora." She has since gone on to become an advisor to the Waitemata and Auckland District Health Boards and is chair of Ngati Whatua. Her opponent, George Ngatai, is a follower of virulently anti-gay Destiny Church and was for a time the head of its social services arm.
