Cardy moving from St-Matthew to St Lukes

Tue 9 Jul 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News

Glynn Cardy St-Matthew-in-the-City’s vicar Glynn Cardy is moving jobs, and denominations, to become the leader of another gay-friendly church - St Lukes Presbyterian in Remuera. “I’ve accepted a position. I have many happy memories to take with me, and so much aroha from so many people – from both the church and wider community,” Cardy says. “I look forward to getting to know a new community, a new denomination, and all the opportunities that will inevitably arise.” While at the Anglican St-Matthew, Cardy has been a vocal advocate for GLBT rights, taking on church leaders over the issues of ordaining gay priests and blessing the unions of same-sex couples. At St Lukes, he will fill the shoes of the late David Clark, a ground-breaking gay minister who made national headlines when he came out in 1991 to confront the Presbyterian Assembly as it debated the still-vexed issue of gay people in the church.
