The latest ad to get homophobes riled up Further homophobic complaints about Get It On! Love Your Condom bus shelter and billboard ads have been kicked to the kerb by the advertising watchdog. Among the complaints about the safe sex billboard was that showing gay men was “an attack on morality”. Complainant H. Young said “If the NZAF wish to advertise 'safe-sex' to this particular demographic, they should be told to advertise in homosexual magazines or websites only. They should be urged to burn the material.” He continued: “I believe that it is very likely these posters will cause serious, and widespread offence, as generally prevailing community standards have not slipped so low as to accept images promoting homosexual oral sex. Yet.” The Advertising Standards Authority’s Complaints Board disagreed entirely, saying it was not likely to cause serious or widespread offence, “particularly when considered in light of the important message being delivered to a hard to reach and high-risk demographic”. With regard to some complainants’ concern that the depiction of homosexual men in itself was offensive, the Complaints Board said that such an opinion was not a ground to uphold a complaint in itself. It follows similar rulings from the Board in the past.
