Rudd's poll strength attributed to marriage stance

Sun 30 Jun 2013 In: International News

Kevin Rudd Australian marriage equality campaigners believe Kevin Rudd’s support for their cause has helped his form in the polls. A national poll released today show Rudd is preferred prime minister only three days after being reappointed to the post. Support for the Labor Party has also increased. Australian Marriage Equality national convener Rodney Croome says Rudd's high-profile support for marriage equality has a strong appeal to younger voters who see this as a signature issue "In the same way that Barack Obama benefitted from his support for marriage equality in last year's US election, Kevin Rudd has gained support from the many young Australians who are passionate enough about marriage equality for it to influence their vote,” he says. "The message to Tony Abbott is that he must also move forward on the issue, by at least allowing a conscience vote, or the Coalition will lose young voters and inner-city voters. "The message to Labor candidates is to come out in support of marriage equality if they want to benefit from the reform's strong appeal to younger voters.”
