Actor Sir Ian McKellen has backed Rainbow Youth’s WTF NZ campaign, happily posing behind a ‘So F*cking Proud’ poster. Rainbow Youth board member Laura McGillivray took the opportunity to chat and pose with Sir Ian during a fundraising lunch in Wellington, raising money for both the Labour Party and Rainbow Youth. WTFNZ - or What The F*CK?! - is a bold fundraising campaign in support of Rainbow Youth. McGillivray says Sir Ian showed a keen and genuine interest in learning about Rainbow Youth and the WTF NZ campaign. Campaign coordinator Murray Riches is now extending a huge thanks to Sir Ian for showing his support and interest in Rainbow Youth and WTF NZ. “It’s truly exciting to have Sir Ian McKellen’s support - I love the picture.” he says. “Sir Ian is a tremendous role model to many young people in New Zealand and shares many of the values the WTF campaign stands for.” “We are inspired by the work he does combating homophobia in the UK, and the public stand he has taken against discrimination based on gender of sexual diversity; including calling bulls**t on the Prime Ministers homophobic ‘gay red shirt’ slur in 2012.” Riches adds that “this work is aligned with the core values of the WTF NZ campaign, which is committed to creating a conversation around homophobia and transphobia, and empowering our communities”.
