Call for anti-homo/transphobia rugby charter

Tue 18 Jun 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

A Queer Avenger has written to both the NZRU and the Minister of Sport calling for a stand, such a charter against homophobia and transphobia in sport that teams and players could sign up to. Sara Fraser has received a response from NZRU Community Relations Manager Ian Long, which says: “We do not condone or tolerate any sort of offensive behaviour or the use of any language which people may find offensive. While APPLAUD (our sideline behaviour initiative) doesn’t specifically relate to Homophobia and Transphobia, the principles are designed to cover all forms of abuse from the sideline. “I was not aware of the charter to Tackle Homophobia and Transphobia in Sport so thanks for passing that on. I’ll follow up with Sport New Zealand to see if it is something they are looking at.”
