Submissions flow in on Anglican stance

Sun 16 Jun 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News

Sir Anand Satyanand Nearly 200 submissions have been made to a group set up by the Anglican church to look at whether it should bless same-sex relationships, and ordain people in them. In a video update, Ma Whea Commission member Sir Anand Satyanand says the group has developed its thinking about how it will report. "And how we will canvas the scriptural and doctrinal issues, the canons, church governance, societal attitudes, scientific research, the human rights dimension and the needs of the future." The former Governor General says the end result of the Commission's work will not be a set of recommendations to the Church, but to "describe the pathways, and what may be involved in following them". Anglican Taonga reports those 'pathways' will be reported to next year's General Synod, which is expected to make a decision on those questions of blessing and ordination. Sir Anand says a range of views have been received from across New Zealand, and from both members of the clergy and lay people. "We have been received with warmth and cooperation in a number of settings ... we hope that that will continue, and that people's best wishes and prayers will accompany our efforts in the weeks and months ahead."
