Russia on verge of shredding GLBTI rights

Wed 12 Jun 2013 In: International News View at NDHA

Russia’s lower house has voted by an overwhelming 434-0 to ban gay ‘propaganda’, a move which is likely to make it all but impossible for GLBTI advocacy and support groups to operate. Just one person abstained and all others backed the bill which will impose hefty fines one anyone holding gay pride rallies, or giving young people information about anything GLBTI-related. It now needs to be approved by Russia’s upper house and signed by President Vladimir Putin, which are both predicted to happen by the end of the this month. The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association of Europe is appealing to people and all over the globe to condemn the law, and to also “consider meaningful actions again Russia demanding to repeal this law and to stop state-sponsored homophobia in the country.”
