France: five charged following teen's death

Mon 10 Jun 2013 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Clement Meric Five people have been charged over the fatal bashing of an 18-year old gay activist in Paris. Prosecutor Francois Molins sought murder charges against one of the suspects in the death of Clement Méric, who was attacked on 5 June. He was already brain dead when taken to hospital, where he later died. Molins’ request for a murder charge against a security guard named only as ‘Esteban’ was declined by an investigating judge. Esteban now faces charges of “deadly blows” which has a penalty of up to 15 years’ jail. Three other men, and Esteban, were also charged with group violence. A woman was also given preliminary charges for complicity in group violence. Molins says all of the suspects admitted connections with an ultranationalist organisation called 'Troisieme Voie'— or Third Way. The charge came after thousands marched through Paris on Saturday to honour Meric. Meanwhile anti marriage equality protestors briefly disrupted the men’s final at the French Open overnight. One man lit a flare and rushed on the court, while a second man also made it onto the court before being surrounded by guards. Six other shirtless protestors unfurled a sign on a nearby court calling for President Francois Hollande to resign.
