Southland support group needs volunteers

Mon 10 Jun 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

File Photo Due to heavy demand from local organisations, Southland Gay and Lesbian Support is working towards being officially re-established and is looking for volunteers. Southland Community Law is helping it get back on its feet. One of those bringing the support group back, Eba Clemens, says local organisations are expressing continued concern about the lack of sexuality and gender identity support. “These organisations are extremely concerned for their clients,” Clemens says, explaining they feel people need community support as well as professional help. “And it's not just young people that are having a problem with sexuality or gender identity issues in the Southland area. We have been contacted by similar organisations concerned with adults as well.” Clemens says Southland Gay and Lesbian Support (SGnLS) has been on the rocks for a long time now, and it needs members to be proactive and involved. “We currently have a team of four people who would stand up to address some of these problems, but four people with no one to support them won’t allow us to reform SGnLS as a legal society.” Clemens says the group needs leaders and new members. “We need ideas, and we need people who would be willing to do paperwork, hard work, and do it for nothing more than ghost chips.” If you can help, contact the group via email at glbtsouthland@gmail.com or through its Facebook page
