Mr Gay NZ furiously fundraising for Antwerp bid

Wed 29 May 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News

Mr Gay New Zealand Chris Olwage has turned down a dream job overseas to represent New Zealand at the Mr Gay World competition in Belgium in August; and he desperately needs some help getting there. The Auckland dancer and personal trainer has set up a Pledge Me account in the hope of making it to Antwerp, where he will compete for the title currently held by New Zealand’s Andreas Derleth. The pageant is being held in conjunction with the World Outgames. “Ever since the organiser contacted me and said it was going to happen it has been a rollercoaster of anxiety and excitement,” Olwage says. “I guess you could say I am nervous, this being twofold too. I'm nervous in that I fear I am not going to make it, and then nervous because I'm going to representing New Zealand, and with the boots of the likes of Aaron Comis and Andy Derleth to fill I fear I may not be enough. But, in saying that I am sure that I will indeed do my best to make NZ proud.” Olwage says he needs loads of financial help to make it to Mr Gay World. “My initial sponsorship proposals fell through due to bad timing and bad luck so the funds are needing to be raised somehow. “I've considered many ways but all take too much time and energy to get done in the small amount of time I have left, I mean that I am a perfectionist and wouldn't want a half effort show, and so PledgeMe seemed the best way go.” Olwage is offering signed pictures, dance lessons and even pointe shoes to supporters.
