Hague: Rights activists "the reverse" of Taliban

Wed 22 May 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News

Kevin Hague Gay Green MP Kevin Hague says a counsellor’s attack on GLBT rights activists as being the “Gay Taliban” suggests very strongly that he hasn't thought very carefully about the issues. Responding to claims from a pair of homophobic Whangarei lodge owners that they are receiving death threats due to their anti-sodomy stance, Auckland counsellor Steve Taylor has accused activists in the gay community of being the “gay Taliban”. “It seems that this minority unelected ‘gay Taliban’ has determined that any alternative opinion, save ideological acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle, is to be ridiculed, attacked, and silenced – which is hardly an example of the tolerance, inclusivity, and diversity that the same strident minority claim to desire,” he writes. “Freedom from discrimination is a fundamental human right,” Hague says. “People standing up for their human rights to be respected and enforced is kind of the reverse of a Taliban-like position. “The Taliban are a group of religious fundamentalists who do not respect the human rights for all, and instead believe that everybody should conform to a rigid and narrow set of moral and behavioural rules. Just saying.” Hague also doubts the credibility of any alleged death threats made to the lodge’s owners. “I look forward to the outcome of any police investigation with great interest,” he says.
