Minnesota will become the 12th US state to introduce marriage equality. The final Senate vote was 37-30 and Governor Mark Dayton is reported to be expected to sign the legislation on Tuesday, local time. That will mean gay and lesbian couples can get married from 1 August. The Minnesota House of Representatives approved the bill on Wednesday by a vote of 75-59. The progress in Minnesota comes less than a week after marriage equality was approved in Delaware, while Rhode Island also recently made the move. It follows victories in Maine, Maryland and Washington State in November. The other six states that have legalised same-sex marriage are Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Iowa. Illinois is currently fighting for marriage equality.
