Thu 9 May 2013 In: International News View at Wayback

Jack Markell Delaware has become the 11th US state to introduce marriage equality, with its governor signing it into law within an hour of the successful vote. Governor Jack Markell said people had waited decades for the successful vote. “I wasn't going to make them wait any longer,” he said, Gay Star News reports. “There were many people in the room who said they never could have imagined that during their lifetimes, this bill would pass.” It means from 1 July, same-sex couples will be able to marry in the mid-Atlantic state. “My view all along was that not only was this the right thing to do but this is what we had to do for Delaware's future,” the governor said. “This was an important message for us to send to great employers, entrepreneurs and others that Delaware is a very welcoming place. It's a great place to live, to love, to raise a family and to build a business.”
