Tribunal reserves decision in Sisneros case

Thu 9 May 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News

Geno Sisneros The Human Rights Review Tribunal has indicated it believes the Anglican Church discriminated against a gay man who was from the process that would allow him to become a priest. Geno Sisneros is a parishioner and the Events Manager at inclusive Auckland church Matthew-in-the-City. His lawyer David Rykin told the hearing while the church can stop people from leading congregations once they become ordained; they have to allow them to get to that point. He said the church can't stop someone from the discernment process or becoming ordained. The church said Sisneros isn't eligible to enter the priesthood because he isn't married or celibate. The Tribunal has rules he was discriminated against, but is still to decide whether the church broke the law by doing so. It has reserved its decision. “[my partner] Michael and I want to thank everyone for their kind words and prayers and love. We drew a great deal of strength from you and we are grateful for all your messages of support,” Geno has told supporters.
