Rhode Island has become the tenth US state to legalise same-sex marriage. Independent Governor Lincoln Chafee said he would sign the bill into law immediately after the successful 56-15 vote. The new law will take effect on August 1. “New England is now complete,” National Campaign Director at Freedom to Marry immediately responded. “We have an entire region of the country that has approved the freedom to marry.” Rhode Island’s move follows victories in Maine, Maryland and Washington State in November. The other six states that have legalised same-sex marriage are Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Iowa. Illinois, Delaware and Minnesota are currently fighting for marriage equality.
