US: Gay Boy Scouts allowed, but leaders banned

Sat 20 Apr 2013 In: International News View at Wayback

America's Boy Scouts are moving to admit gay youth members, but continue their ban on adult leaders. "No youth may be denied membership in the Boy Scouts of America on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone," is the change the group has proposed to membership standards. "While the BSA does not proactively inquire about sexual orientation of employees, volunteers, or members, we do not grant membership to individuals who are open or avowed homosexuals or who engage in behaviour that would become a distraction to the mission of the BSA," it says. "Until every parent and young person have the same opportunity to serve, the Boy Scouts will continue to see a decline in both membership and donations," said Rich Ferraro, a spokesman for the gay-rights watchdog group GLAAD. The resolution will be considered at the BSA'S National Annual Meeting, scheduled for May at the Gaylord Texan Resort
