Other issues to the fore after marriage vote

Sat 20 Apr 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The Queer Avengers say it’s time to focus on "bigger issues", now New Zealand has marriage equality. The activist group says it’s pleased the Bill has passed and has congratulated everyone involved. “Now it is time to focus on the bigger issues” says Queer Avengers member Kassie Hartendorp. “Marriage Equality is all well and good, but it is not going to end the violence and hatred that many in our communities experience, any time soon.” Another Queer Avenger, Kay, says it’s great that young queer and trans people will be able to grow up with the same choices for celebrating their relationships, but first they have to survive till adulthood. “Sadly for some young people bullying and depression mean they don't make it. We need to make schools and society safe and supportive for all young people, but particularly for those from sexual minorities.”
