Thu 11 Apr 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News

Michael Douglas and Matt Damon in Behind the Candelabra The Liberace biopic that was “too gay” for US movie studios will be released in New Zealand theatres. Behind the Candelabra stars Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his younger lover, and was made for HBO. Director Steven Soderbergh says it put to every film studio in Hollywood, but they all said it was “too gay”. It will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, then play on HBO in the US on 26 May, then is being released theatrically internationally. Roadshow have confirmed they will have distribution in New Zealand for the movie, but don’t yet have a release date for it. Meanwhile, Sky’s subscription channel SOHO has bought the rights to the entire US version of Queer As Folk, which has never been aired on New Zealand TV. It will play on Thursdays at 9.30PM from 30 May.
