Love an “inadequate basis” for marriage

Love and marriage don't go together like a horse and carriage, according to Glyn Carpenter The head of a group which is upset about being labelled extremists and haters, believes “the popular conception of love is a completely inadequate basis for marriage”. Glyn Carpenter from the NZ Christian Network makes the statement in a piece on the group’s website, where he also blames “the popular conception of love” for the high rate of marriage breakdown. “Even though this marriage bill is not the main issue facing marriage, it’s very hard to see how it will not make matters worse as a generation grows up with an even more diminished view of God’s ideal of marriage,” Carpenter says. “Parliament redefining marriage sends out a signal that marriage is nothing more than a human construct which can be defined and redefined as required.” Carpenter says he feels sorry that gay people have been caught up in the debate, saying the main Christian argument against the bill “is really not about them”. He says it’s about the institution of marriage, which he believes was created by God, for ‘male and female’. “Opposition to redefining marriage is not about gays, because there would be identical opposition to allowing two or more heterosexual couples to join in a single marriage, as it could easily lead to a breakdown in faithfulness among the partners, and potential attachment/identity confusion for children,” Carpenter adds.
