Louisa Wall is in Ecuador representing New Zealand at the IPU Louisa Wall is expressing hope from Ecuador that “all goes well” for the committee stages of her marriage equality Bill tonight. “I hope that reason will prevail and that due regard is given to the Select Committee amendments as we move forward,” she says. “It is hard being so far away at this time but it is best the bill continues its path and I am confident my colleagues will advocate strongly for equality and fairness for all under the law.” Wall is in Ecuador for the Inter-Parliamentary Union, where New Zealand’s bid to have a sexual orientation and gender identity rights theme adopted has been voted down. “We met strong opposition from African and Middle Eastern delegations and lost the vote 31 to 21,” Wall says. “As Winston Churchill said: ‘You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life’. “We will not give up and will continue to fight to have this global body address this important issue.”
