Fiji: Weekend sentence for man who raped sister

Thu 21 Mar 2013 In: International News View at Wayback

The man has been jailed, but only for the weekends. A Fijian man will go to jail for the next eight years, but only on the weekends, for raping his own sister to “get rid of her homosexual behaviour”. The 33-year-old will go to prison at 7PM every Friday and is to be released from prison at 7PM every Sunday, Fiji Village reports. It says the former Special Police Inspector was so overjoyed by a rugby win in 2007 that he drank for 24 hours straight. “The magistrate said it is seen that the act was done to get rid of the man's sister's homosexual behaviour and this was a random act, not premeditated,” the news report states. “Magistrate Premachandra said the man was foolish and no proper judgment could be taken at the time due to his irregular mind.” The Director of Public Prosecutions Office is appealing the sentence.
