Louisa Wall Marriage equality Bill author Louisa Wall says an important message that “you can be who you are,” has been sent to the GLBT community with the passage of the second reading of the legislation. The Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Bill passed the crucial second reading stage 77 votes to 44 tonight. “Right from the outset I’ve said marriage equality is about fairness and choice for all New Zealanders,” the Labour MPs says. “My colleagues from across the political spectrum have sent an important message to the gay, lesbian and transgender community. You don't have to change. You can be who you are. “Tonight’s progress means those unable to access the institution of marriage for no reason other than their sex, sexual orientation or gender identity are a step closer in their fight against discrimination.” Wall says the depth of feeling expressed by those in and out of Parliament has been moving. She says parliamentarians on both sides of the debate spoke with honesty and with passion this evening. “To be valued for who we are is the bare minimum we should expect from others. It's the bare minimum we should expect from the State. That is the argument that was fought and won tonight. I look forward to taking this Bill through to its committee stages.”
