Gay 'fake prince' auction nets over $1million

Mon 11 Mar 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News

Joel Hohepa Morehu-Barlow An auction of property seized from the gay New Zealander who for years defrauded Queensland health authorities and who posed as a Tahitian prince has raised $NZ1,138,000. Joel Hohepa Morehu-Barlow, who was a fixture on the Auckland gay scene over a decade ago, was arrested in early December last year and is charged with fraud totaling over $NZ18,000,000, some of which he used to purchase high-end designer items to maintain his charade of wealth. He is expected to plead guilty to the charges which indicate much of his ill-gotten wealth was diverted from Queensland health authorities. Amongst the 810 lots auctioned yesterday by the public trustee were Fur hats, watches, expensive suits, a Queensland Reds jersey, a racing bicycle, a Hermes saddle, and a Louis Vuitton surfboard.
