Mum wants full inquiry into gay soldier's death

Wed 6 Mar 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News

The mother of gay New Zealand soldier Corporal Douglas Hughes wants an open inquiry into his death. Coroner Gordon Matenga ruled Corporal Hughes death was suicide and suppressed details about the findings by the Court of Inquiry. His mother, Venus Poa, has told Radio New Zealand she wants all the details surrounding her son's death released, and a full open investigation. The family is concerned Corporal Hughes was bullied bout his sexuality before his death and will hold a meeting on how to proceed. Labour Defence spokesman Phil Goff and Green MP Kevin Hague are also asking for an inquiry to be held, something which is strongly backed in a GayNZ.com poll, where 89 per cent of those who have taken part agree there should be an inquiry.
