Meeting on K' Rd violence being held tonight

Tue 26 Feb 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

A community meeting is being held tonight to discuss rising concerns about the violence against the GLBT community on Karangahape Rd. It comes as four teenagers are facing assault-related charges over an attack on a gay man in his 30s on the corner of the Ponsonby end of Karangahape Rd and Hereford St in the early hours of Friday morning. That attack is the most recent in a string which have been reported to GayNZ.com Daily News. Community stalwart Karen Ritchie and Rainbow Youth’s Tom Hamilton have organised tonight’s meeting, which will be facilitated by Human Rights Commissioner Richard Tankersley. The open community meeting has been scheduled for 6PM tonight at the Parlour of Pitt Street Methodist Church. It will give people a chance to share stories of their experiences, and express how they feel. “We would love to see as many as possible there, the violence is getting out of hand,” Ritchie says. “Let’s work together with the police and see how we can make changes.”
