Reforming Heroes getting plenty of interest

Thu 21 Feb 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News

The former Heroes team There has been strong interest in the reforming Ponsonby Heroes rugby team ahead the gay rugby world cup, the Bingham Cup, coming to Sydney next year. “We've got a list of about 30 people so far who have registered some interest,” says organiser David Morris. “It’s hard to gauge at this stage as to how seriously committed these people are. But we plan to have an 'initial' meeting in mid-March to decide if this is something worth pursuing,” he says. “We expect to have a mix of experienced and rookie players in our team, with ages of interested people so far ranging from early 20s to early 40s. The team will play in the more social middle and lower tiers of the tournament, with Morris explaining the tournament accommodates a wide range of abilities. “The top tier in the Bingham Cup is fiercely competitive. Sydney Convicts in fact won the last competition, and it will not be our goal to win the overall tournament,” he says. “The teams that compete in the highest tier are well established teams, experienced and well-drilled. They typically compete in semi-competitive mainstream competitions in their home unions - with a couple winning their competitions.” Morris says social rugby is a great way to meet like-minded guys who enjoy sports, from all over the world. “However, the tournament itself is set up to include more than just rugby, rugby, rugby. There are a lot of evening events and day trips organised around the tournament weekend.” You can contact David Morris at: davidmorrisot@gmail.com
