GLBT comedy icon Margaret Cho will take the stage in Auckland in April as part of the New Zealand International Comedy Festival. Tickets went on sale at 9AM this morning here for the show at SkyCity Theatre on Monday 29 April. Cho is bringing her new show Mother to New Zealand, which offers up an untraditional look at motherhood and how we look at maternal figures and strong women in queer culture. It’s described as probably her edgiest show to date, filled with riotous observations on race, drugs, sexuality – gay-straight-everything in between, celebrity, culture and politics. Cho’s irreverent humour has always come from a queer perspective, and as she has explained to New York Magazine: "I refer to myself as gay, but I am married to a man. Of course, I've had relationships with women, but my politics are more queer than my lifestyle." She has spoken openly about both her gay and straight relationships in her routines. Cho grew up in San Francisco in the '70s and '80s and credits the gay men and drag queens she knew for teaching her how to be herself and be brave.
