Grandkids of Westboro founder leave church

Sat 9 Feb 2013 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Megan Roper-Phelps Two granddaughters of the founder of the viciously homophobic Westboro Baptist Church have left, and apologised for the pain they have caused. Megan Phelps-Roper, 27, was one of the most outspoken members of the congregation, however she and her sister Grace have walked away. They have denounced its campaigns to disrupt funerals for military officers, entertainers and shooting victims, and apologized for years of carrying signs proclaiming "God hates" gay people. While they actually left last year, they have just this week released a statement saying "inflicting pain on others wasn't the goal, but it was one of the outcomes. We wish it weren't so, and regret that hurt." They are granddaughters of Westboro founder Fred Phelps. Their mother has denounced them and a spokesman for the church has told the Kansas City Star "If they continue with the position that they have, those two girls, yeah, they're going to hell," also suggesting that the two women would no longer be allowed to have any contact with their family members.
