Big Gay Out organisers say a “colour bomb” is going to go off at tomorrow’s Big Gay Out, where the forecast is for nothing but sun. MetService is predicting a sunny day, with a high of 25, for the annual day of gay at Auckland’s Coyle Park, Pt Chevalier, from 12-7pm. The Big Gay Out comes during the opening weekend of the inaugural Auckland Pride Festival, which kicked off in style with the Pride Gala last night (see pictures here). At the Big Gay Out tomorrow, the Rainbow Run will see people with white shirts get nailed by coloured chalk bombs. Get it On! spokesman Joe Rich says there are only two guidelines for festival-goes wanting to participate on the day: “Remember to bring a white shirt, and be prepared to get plastered in coloured chalk powder,” he says. “By the end, you’ll look like you fell into a tie dyed vat of coloured goodness,” he adds. Rich says all products used in the Rainbow Run are 100 per cent natural and safe – “you can eat the stuff if you’d like, though we don’t recommend that”. The event is situated next to the dance tent and will be running throughout the day. Get It On! staff went on a chopper ride thanks to Durex staff yesterday to see Coyled P)ark being set up! Other experiences to look out for at the Big Gay Out include the Durex Perfect Glide Slide, dance tents, market stalls, face painting, the Big Gay Out dog competition and acts at the Main Stage including the Get it On! Underwear Parade, Drag Queen shows, community performances and headline acts Maree Sheehan, Brooke Duff, and Kids of 88. “If you happen to be near the sitting area in front of the stage at say, 5pm, then you might be in for a fun surprise,” Rich says. “Though of course I’m not giving anything away just yet.” The only hint Rich is offering is to “watch out for balls”.
